To ensure clean energy power generation projects, Masdar City in ABU Dhabi has introduced the concept of “Windstalk”.

Windstalk is a concept of a generator fully driven by wind power and also a public space. This project took into account the hint of wind direction. To be precise, Masdar’s Windstalk project consists of 1,203 wind poles, which are anchored at a height of 55 meters above the ground. The diameter of its concrete base is between 10 and 20 meters.

The visible stems are made of carbon fiber reinforced resin rods, with a bottom diameter of 30 centimeters and a top diameter of 5 centimeters. The top of the pole is equipped with an LED light, which can adjust the brightness according to the wind force. When there is no wind, the pole remains stationary and the lights will dim.

The bottoms of the poles touch each other, forming a fabric similar to a carpet. Another interesting fact is that the bottom of the stem is shaped like an elliptical vortex. When rainwater slides down these poles, it will slide down the slope at the bottom and gather in the gaps between the poles, allowing plants to grow wildly.

How do these wind farms operate?

Contrary to expectations, these wind farms do not rely solely on wind to drive turbines for power generation.

In this kind of wind farm, the poles sway in the wind, and the piezoelectric disc stack is compressed, thereby generating current through the electrodes. All of these are presented in a visual way to show the electricity generated by the pole. As soon as the wind stops, the LED lights will go out.

To further maximize the power generation of the wind turbine farm, a torque generator was installed at the bottom of the pole.

When the rod swings, the fluid is forced to flow through the cylinder, converting the kinetic energy of the swinging rod into electrical energy. Since the power generation potential of a wind farm ultimately depends on wind power, designers have developed this energy storage method.
