Carbon Fiber Automotive Parts: Common Questions
Carbon fiber or aluminium for body panels?
Aluminium is cheaper, more damage-tolerant and easier to repair. Carbon fiber wins on weight and on the ability to form shapes aluminium cannot hold without expensive tooling. For low-volume cars, motorsport and visible exterior trim, carbon usually wins on total programme cost once tooling is amortised; for high-volume commodity panels, aluminium still makes more sense.
Does the cost come down at volume?
It comes down, but not to steel levels. The material cost is roughly flat; what falls with volume is labour, because cycle time drops once tooling, trimming fixtures and finishing jigs exist. Above a few hundred units per year the per-part price typically improves substantially.
What happens in a crash?
Composites fail differently — they crack and delaminate rather than deform plastically. That is excellent for energy absorption in a designed crush structure and less forgiving in a fender-bender, where a composite panel may need replacing rather than being knocked back into shape. This is worth weighing honestly before committing.
Will the clear coat yellow or peel?
Modern automotive clear coats with UV inhibitors hold up well, but the coating is the sacrificial layer — it protects the epoxy underneath and needs to stay intact. Deep scratches that reach the laminate should be sealed. Regular washing and waxing is genuinely enough for most cars.
Forged carbon or woven — which should I choose?
Woven 3K twill and plain weave are the classic look and the better structural choice, since the fiber stays continuous. Forged or chopped carbon has a distinctive marbled appearance and suits trim pieces and non-structural panels, but its mechanical properties are lower and less predictable. We will recommend based on whether the part carries load.
