Hydrogen Storage: Why Carbon Fiber Wound Pressure Vessels Are Taking Over

Hydrogen is only as good as the tank that holds it. As the world races to decarbonize transport and industry, one material has become the quiet enabler of practical hydrogen storage: ألياف الكربون.

Why tanks need carbon fiber

Compressed hydrogen is stored at 350–700 bar. At those pressures a steel vessel would be far too heavy to move. Type IV pressure vessels solve this with a plastic liner fully wrapped in carbon fiber composite — delivering the strength to contain the gas at a fraction of the weight.

  • Up to 70 MPa service pressure — far lighter than all-metal alternatives
  • Corrosion and fatigue resistant — composites don’t rust and tolerate cyclic pressurization
  • High safety margin — carbon wraps contain bursts without shrapnel
  • Range gains — lighter tanks mean more payload and longer driving range for FCEVs

Where it shows up

  • Fuel-cell vehicles — passenger cars, buses and trucks
  • Stationary storage — grid balancing and backup power
  • Aerospace and drones — weight-critical high-pressure storage
  • Refueling infrastructure — tube trailers and cascade buffers

A supply chain ready to scale
